Bali, Indonesia

Bali alone conjures up images of a paradise. It’s more than just a location; it’s a feeling, a goal, and a tropical state of mind.

At every level of life, Bali’s rich and diverse culture is on display, from the exquisite flower-petal offerings left all over the island to the procession of merry-go-round locals marching to one of the numerous temple ceremonies to the otherworldly traditional music and dance presented all over the island. Nearly everything has a spiritual purpose. While the largest peak, Gunung Agung, is the island’s spiritual centre, Bali’s middle is dominated by the stunning volcanoes of the central mountains and hillside temples like Pura Luhur Batukau (one of the island’s estimated 10,000 temples).

On Bali, you have the option to lose yourself in the mayhem of Kuta or the sybaritic pleasures of Seminyak and Kerobokan, surf wild beaches in the south, or simply hang out on Nusa Lembongan. You can enjoy a luxurious retreat on the Bukit Peninsula or go family-friendly in Sanur. The cultural centre of Bali is Ubud, which is also where the most stunning rice fields and historic sites are located. East and west Bali both border Ubud. Despite being sparsely populated, the north and west of Bali have diving and surfing that are worth the trip.

Bali offers beaches, surfing, diving, and resorts of all sizes, but what truly sets Bali apart from other vacation destinations is its unique culture and its people. Even if the stereotype of the cheerful Balinese can be overused, the people who call this tiny island home are in fact kind and truly welcoming. A playful, subtle sense of humour is also present. Many locals will shout “bung ujan”—which means today’s rain is cancelled—when they encounter a bald tourist, implying that the hairless head is like a clear sky.

At the end of the day (or the beginning of the day for some guests), Bali’s vibrant culture and abundance of breathtaking vistas are what elevate Bali’s already-exhilarating experience to a whole new level. Because Bali is enjoyable regardless of your goals or identity. Canggu combines all of these attractions into one attractive package, with Seminyak offering stores and designers, Kerobokan offering opulent coastal resorts and excellent dining, Kuta and Legian offering the nightlife. While reviving your own spirit in Ubud or catching the ideal wave in Bingin, dive deep into Bali’s culture. Whatever you need, it’s here.
